Pine Needles and Fine Motor Skills

Have your child help find and gather pine needles from outside. Find an empty box and draw the outline of a pine tree in the bottom. Place the needles in the box and add a dry paint brush. Your child will enjoy the beautiful smells while building fine motor skills and being creative.

For older children, think about adding spices to enhance the sensory experience. Other snowy inspirations might include flour and beads. Perhaps your child doesn’t want an outline, just their imagination! Let your child brainstorm and make sure they have extra pine boughs to snip as needed.

For easy clean up, place a cloth under the box to shake outside when finished. At the end of play, dump the contents of the box in a colander and shake. Your pine needles will be ready for play again tomorrow!
